Spotlight on Students (SOS): Let's Get Moving Morning at The Carson Center. This is Project #3 in our SOS series and it will provide participants a complimentary introduction to dance and movement and reinforce literacy, gross motor skills, and self-acceptance.
Children will receive a new book, Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andréa) and all participants, including caregivers, will participate in a dance/movement workshop, lunch, and movie, with activities and format similar to Project #1 and #2.
· Giraffes Can't Dance celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2018 with over 4 million books in print. Amazon ranking, #1 in Children's Self-Esteem Books#15 in Children's Books #23 in All Books (Adult and Children). Gerald the giraffe longs to dance, but his legs are too skinny and his neck is too long. Gerald finds a way to overcome his limitations and embrace his differences and finds out that he can boogie down as well as the other animals.
· Activity: 15-minute dance or yoga instruction. Local dancers or yoga instruction will lead children (and caregivers who wish to participate) in body awareness and gross motor activity. Children will learn basic choreography and do a little improv dancing of their own, thereby making a connection to the story while also reinforcing dance and music education.
· Movie: Happy Feet. Summary: Son of Memphis and Norma, little sweet penguin Mumble has a big problem: he cannot sing a single note. In a world where everyone needs a heart song to attract a soul mate, Mumble feels he does not belong there. Our hero Mumble is the worst singer in the world, but he can tap dance brilliantly.
